Easter

Rewind: Easter for us is all about Family time. Easter mornings growing up would be spent at Church where we’d put on a play and sing and then home to a Roast Lamb dinner cooked by mum. If we hadn’t hunted out our eggs before Church this is when we would do that. One Easter Sunday Mum went to Splott Market to buy lamb for the dinner and came home with a white rabbit instead. Bugsy become out family pet and poor dad had to quickly fashion him a hutch – one which he knocked up from his magical shed store and lasted the rabbits long and healthy life time.

Ways to Cwtch at Easter:

Easter Egg Hunt- One of our favourite things to do is go hunting for our eggs. Mum (sorry the Easter Bunny) would write out rhyming clues for us to try and find the eggs. They’d be hidden inside of things, up high, inside and outside of the house. It makes for a for a fun activity and we do the same now (for our dogs!). To extend the activity you could hide the small foam/plastic eggs or pictures of eggs up. I’ve found this useful when doing a hunt for a larger group to share the eggs out fairly at the end or one larger egg.

Breakfast – There is no other choice than a soft boiled egg and soldiers for breakfast on Easter morning. You won’t catch us eating chocolate before lunch as this is still one our traditions. We still use the bunny egg cup that we had as children. It has to be soft boiled with just a touch of salt. Perfection! We sometimes get silly and draw faces on the eggs before boiling. At least we know who’s egg belongs to who.

It’s all about the chocolate. The big eggs come with so much packaging which can be wasteful so consider this when buying eggs, we love a chocolate dunny where you can recycle the foil. We’ve also tried to shop local this year and have bought eggs from Brecon Chocolate and Wickedly Welsh Chocolate and the packaging has been just right. Whilst it’s nice to give presents this is a trend that we’ve just not got on board with. If you do give presents make them personal and thoughtful rather than giving lots of presents as if it were Christmas, take two,

Get outside The shops are closed, the weather is usually great (remember that Easter when we had snow!) and it’s a chance for us to get outside. One of our favourite walks to take is Roath Park lake, but it can get pretty busy so we head down the coast road, or over the mountain to visit family. It doesn’t matter where, but doing it together and getting outside is what’s important.

Egg rolling – Rachel lives at the foot of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh and it’s a popular site for egg rolling- a tradition that reflects the rolling of the stone from the tomb of Jesus. It’s such a sweet tradition that we don’t see in many locations and given the hills we have in Wales there are plenty of ideal spots. Decorate your eggs so you know it’s yours and then head outside and roll those eggs down the hill. It’s simple the one who rolls the furthest (without breaking!) wins.

Sunday Roast – Now this is a requirement of any Sunday for us but on Easter Sunday its a two joint Roast featuring both lamb and beef and always with lots of mint sauce.

You’ll find that our lives involve lots of family time and lots of food. Easter is a great chance to reset this focus and add more ways to cwtch to your life. And if you’re lucky enough to have family or friends in your bubble this weekend….give them a cwtch.
