We’re not hygging we’re cwtching
Whilst the rest of the world embraced the Danish hygge concept we sat back and reflected…after all this concept wasn’t new to us. Anyone growing up in Wales or with Welsh family knows the word cwtch, and know that it means more than a hug or a safe place. It means creating a space or feeling of comfort and happiness, a feeling or moment of contentment and calmness. This also happens to be a given definition of hygge:
Hygge (noun) a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being
For those growing up in Wales we certainly used the word cwtch instead of cosy. Want to settle down for the evening…you’ll be having a cwtch on the sofa or getting cwtchy. If a child (or anyone for that matter) was feeling ill, a cwtch would make them feel better. When adding cushions and blankets to your house, you were making it into your cwtch.
Fill your house with love and comforts and you’ll have created your perfect cwtch. Do things with or for your friends and family and you’ll be creating a feeling of cwtch and for its purest form, give someone a loving hug creating a safe and loved feeling. That’s a cwtch!
For us we’ll always cwtch rather than hygge!
